Take Her Hand Download Lyrics

This song was written to honor the life and work of Dr. John Gray, known as the Father of Geriatric Medicine in Atlantic Canada. Dr. Grey has been a great mentor and a caring inspiration to many people. Dr. Kenneth Rockwood introduced me to his life and work. In the short time that I have learned about Dr. Gray, I have heard countless stories from people whose loved ones he has cared for in Nova Scotia. I hope you enjoy this song dedicated to his life and work.

Remember Me Download Lyrics

At the time that Dr. Rockwood asked me to write this song I had no immediate personal tie to dementia. My encounters with dementia were limited to a summer job in 1997 working at a recreational assistant at a seniors residence in Grand Falls NB. When Dr. Rockwood asked me to create a song that would bring light to such a complex topic as Alzheimer’s disease I had much to learn, and many people to learn from. This song was the beginning for my creating music with my husband Dale Murray to help raise awareness about dementia. This song is dedicated to people living with dementia, as well health care providers and caregivers that work to make care better for people affected by dementia.

There Is A Light Download Lyrics

The ‘light’ I am referring to can be found in the nature of a caring relationship. Some people believe that ‘there is no light’ with dementia, but I have seen joy and hope and love and health in people affected by dementia. In no way am I trying to sugar coat the serious and difficult challenges faced by people living with dementia and close friends and family. I speak to the positive affect that community and family support, early detection and treatment, and education have on the quality of life for people. I learned early on from Dr. John Gray that the most significant thing you can do for another human being is show that you care. I’ve learned by hearing Dr. Rockwood in his Memory Clinics gently and clearly tell his patients “This diagnosis does not change who you are; you are the same person now as you were when you came here today, and you will always be the same person. The people who love you now will always love you.”

The Promise Download Lyrics

This song speaks to difficult challenges that some caregivers experience when providing support for someone with dementia. It is very common to be overwhelmed and to feel alone. This song is based on a number of observations and conversations I have had this past year. I have developed the opinion that there are many different social and economic reasons for how people cope with caring for someone with dementia. It is important to hear and gain an understanding for the complex emotional, physical and financial challenges people experience so we can help make care better for people affected by dementia.

Coming in June: A song called That’s Not My Mother will be posted here in June for Delirium Awareness Month.

I’m talking about my new album Sleeping With a Stranger. It’s coming… soon we will announce the release dates for Canada, and I’m going to think of some creative way to give away a few free discs. If you have any ideas tweet me about it. In the meantime please surf this new site and send positivity to Mat Dunlap and Victoria Nicoll (Mr. & Mrs.) for my new album artwork and website.

Oh, and check out my WHO CARES? page (right sidebar). This is where I’ll be posting songs and news relating to important stuff that affects more than just me.

In 2009 I met Dr. Kenneth Rockwood, an internationally recognized Geriatrician working with Dalhousie Geriatric Medicine. Dr. Rockwood asked me to write a song to honor the life and work of one of his great mentors, a man considered to be The Father of Geriatric Medicine in the Atlantic Provinces. I was immediately inspired by Dr. Rockwood’s enthusiasm towards a person who dedicated his life to making care better for people, particularly the aging population. And so, my husband Dale Murray and I wrote andrecorded Take Her Hand, a song about the English Geriatrician Dr. John Gray.

Dr. Rockwood then asked Dale and I to produce a song that would honor people affected by Alzheimer’s disease. Once again I was inspired by Dr. Rockwood’s desire to combine art, research, and personal stories to help make care better for people. After recording the song we performed Remember Me in March 2011 at the International Dementia Conference in Toronto, ON. In July 2011 I was invited by Dr. Kenneth Rockwood, Geriatric Medicine Research (GMR) at Dalhousie University and The Canadian Dementia Knowledge Translation Network (CDKTN) to accept a position as Artist in Residence for one year (July 2011-July 2012). It was with great privilege and honor that I accepted this position.

On this page I will post versions of the songs written during my Artist in Residency, and provide a bit of background about the songs. All songs are being recorded with acclaimed producer and musician Dale Murray. I will also post NEWS about future plans to develop and share this music.
